A Pakistani jets formation was detected at 9:45 am, 10 kilometers within the Line of Control in India. The twenty-four Pakistani air force strike package included eight F-16s, four Mirage-3 aircraft, four Chinese made JF-17 "Thunder" fighter.
Eight Indian Air Force fighter jets intercepted the twenty-four package in the air.
Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman piloted the MiG 21 Bison engaged with an R-73 air-to-air missile against Pakistani F-16 jet. The Pakistani F-16 fighter jet was shot down, two pilots were seen parachuting down on the Pakistani side of the Line of Control.
