The United Nations Security Council has condemned the bombings that killed 40 CRPF personnel. The statement also mentions Pakistan based terror group that claimed responsibility for the terror attack Jaish-e-Mohammed.
The statement was adopted unanimously by its permanent and non-permanent members, including China.
France is expected to move a proposal along with the United States and United Kingdom to declare founder of JeM Masood Azhar a terrorist. The move in the past was vetoed by China.
The statement reads –
“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly suicide bombing in Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in over 40 Indian paramilitary forces dead and dozens wounded on February 14, 2019, for which Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) has claimed responsibility.
The members of the Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice, and urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Government of India and all other relevant authorities in this regard.
..any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed. They reaffirm the need for all states to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts”.
The external affairs spokesperson from India Raveesh Kumar in a tweet mentioned, “Pakistan comes under international pressure to act against terrorists & terror groups operating from areas under its control & to take action against those responsible for Pulwama attack. UNSC strongly condemns cowardly suicide bombing in #Pulwama by JeM”.
The condemnation and naming of JeM in the statement issued by the United Nations, is a major bubble burst for Pakistan. The nation is reeling under bankruptcy, it lost aid from the United States quite recently. There is tremendous pressure on Pakistan to act against terrorist operating from it’s soil against Afghanistan and India. The nation is still insulated by nations like China and Saudi Arabia.
However, the ties between China and Pakistan would come under question after the shaming of Pakistan at the United Nations level.
