At least twenty students died in a fire at a coaching institute in the city of Surat in the state of Gujarat. Students were seen jumping and falling from the building in the western city of Surat as black smoke billowed from windows.
Most of the victims were teenagers who had been studying at a tuition centre.
The flames spread the entire classroom because of flammable roofing, however the cause of the fire is still to be ascertained.
More than 20 students sustained serious injuries and were being treated in hospital in Gujarat. The Reuters reported that many students were trapped in the fire because the fire began near the staircase.
The office of Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani ordered an inquiry into the incident and a report is expected within three days, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to twitter to express anguish over the fire tragedy.
