The Former Defence Minister of India and sitting Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar was cremated with full state honours at Panjim’s Miramar Beach on Monday evening.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and plenty of other union and state ministers were present to pay their last respects.
Mr. Parrikar died after a prolonged battle with cancer. The announcement of his death was tweeted by the President Ram Nath Kovind.
The down to earth four time Chief Minister’s final journey had thousands join the funeral procession.
The Centre has announced national mourning on Monday, during which government offices, schools and colleges remained shut.
Manohar Parrikar was in and out of several hospitals in the last one year at Delhi, Mumbai, Goa and New York. But he was present at the state assembly in January during the presentation of the state budget.He made rare public appearances while he was hooked to a nasal tube.
His death creates a huge void in the state of Goa and for Goan politics.
