The Upper house, Rajya Sabha passed the 10% classless reservation bill today, it received 165 ‘ayes’ and 7 ‘noes’ during voting.
This comes a day after the lower house, Lok Sabha too passed the bill unanimously.
The Rajya Sabha debated the bill for over 10 hours, before it passed the new law. The bill will benefit mostly upper caste, who till now were not included in any form of reservation.
The proposed legislation will benefit People earning less than INR₹ 8 lakh annually, individuals who own farm land below 5 acres and People who own a house measuring less than 1,000 square feet.
The winter session of Rajya Sabha was extended by a day as the government seeked to pass this piece of constitution. During the debate many opposition parties questioned the government’s timing as the general elections are just 4 months away.
