Passenger car sales decline 35.9%, commercial vehicles down 25.7%, two-wheeler sales slide 16.8%

The passenger vehicle segment saw sales declined by 30.98 percent to 2,00,790 units in July, from 2,90,931 units in the same period a year ago. This is the ninth month that has seen a consecutive decline.

Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) released data saying domestic car sales were down 35.95 percent at 1,22,956 units as against 1,91,979 units in July 2018.

Two-wheeler segment sales fell by 16.8 percent to 1511692 units. Motorcycle sales declined by 18.8 percent to 933996  against 11,51,324 units in the year-ago period, while the same for scooters dipped by 12.10 percent.

The sales of commercial vehicles were down 25.71 percent to 56,866 units in July as compared with 76,545 units in the year-ago period, SIAM said.

Total vehicle dispatches by automobile manufacturers declined significantly by 18.7 percent  year-on-year to 1,825,148 units in July.

Specifically, Maruti Suzuki India’s  total domestic wholesales in July declined sharply by 36 percent.
