Pakistan in isolation after UNSC designates Masood Azhar as “Global Terrorist”

Free Pakistani terrorists Masood Azhar was finally designated a global terrorists, after China removed objections to his listing. The listing was confirmed by the United  Nations Security Council (UNSC). China had earlier vetoed the declaration four times to discuss the charges.

This is a huge diplomatic win for India as it’ was wanting to corner Pakistan on terror globally. India who was not a part of the permanent five, was backed by US, UK, France and Russia earlier, now China. The UN decision means freezing of Masood Azhar’s finances and assets, a travel ban and an arms embargo.

The UN Security council resolution cites Masood Azhar’s association with al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden and the Taliban and also his call for terror recruits to join the fight in Afghanistan against western forces.

Masood Azhar’s Jaish-e-Mohammed was behind the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 soldiers were killed in February. In retaliation, India sent fighter jets to Pakistan’s Balakot to bomb a Jaish terror training camps.

Soon after the Pulwama attacks in February, a fresh proposal to declare him a global terrorist was pushed in the council by UK, France and US. China was the only member state to veto the motion, calling it a “technical hold”. India then sent over Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale to discuss the issue with the Chinese counterpart.

Last week China expressed positive news over the issue.

Also the diplomatic victory comes in the middle of the national election in India, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pitched his government’s aggressive anti-terror efforts and national security focus.
