The Congress today named its Varanasi candidate Ajay Rai, who was placed third in the 2014 election will fight Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The announcement comes on a day, when the PM Modi conducted a roadshow in Varanasi, a day before filing his election papers tomorrow. This announcement ended all the speculation about a giant clash in the temple town.
Earlier, there were speculations about Priyanka Gandhi Vadra contesting from Varanasi against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this national election. Rahul Gandhi when asked if he plans to field his sister against PM Modi, he said, “I will leave you in suspense. Suspense is not always a bad thing.”
In 2014, the Prime Minister won with 5.8 lakh votes, while Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal came second with around two lakh votes and Ajay Rai finished third in with 75,000 votes.
Until recently, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra maintained that she would contest from Varanasi “if the party asks me”.
There were plenty of rumors floating about her contesting from Varanasi since she joined the Congress Party in January this year. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was mande incharge of campaign for east Uttar Pradesh, which also included Varanasi. Mrs. Vadra also toured the district on a three day boat campaign last month.
While touring Varanasi, she raised questions about why the prime minister was neglecting Varanasi as he travelled across the world. In a rally she said, “I was stunned to hear from people in Varanasi that in five years, the PM didn’t get time to go to a single village, visit even one family in his constituency.”
