Shaktikanta Das was appointed the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) by the Government of India. Mr. Das was appointed for a period of 3 years. Shaktikanta Das served as the economic affairs secretary and is believed to be the key man behind the planning and execution of the demonetisation .
He was the face of the Government and RBI who made plenty of public statements during demonetisation. Das is from the 1980 Tamil Nadu batch IAS, he suppose to be in good books of the Prime Minister and Finance Minister.
Das was also the brain behind rolling out of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). He was instrumental in pushing GST soon after the Modi government took charge. Das is the man who has seen both the sides of economic governance, the government as well as the RBI.
Putting Das at the helm of the RBI might be seen as a move to steer the Central bank towards the government's point of view. He would focus on the logjam of expenditure of the RBI funds and the Government of India.
Shaktikanta Das was appointed RBI governor, after Urjit Patel resigned on Monday. The RBI Board will meet on Friday, so his appointment is crucial.
