Mumbai police impose curfew, detain hundreds of citizens protesting felling of 2500 trees

More than 200 protesters were detained and roads leading to Aarey were blocked by police in Mumbai. The government has imposed Section 144 — a curfew — to ban unlawful assembly in the area.

The Bombay HC on Friday gave a nod to authorities to cut down over 2,500 trees for a metro car shed project. Hours later in the dark authorities began chopping down trees, the videos of trees being cut  were circulated widely on social media.

This prompted citizens rushing to the area to protest and stop authorities from cutting down trees.

According to the law, trees can be cut only 15 days after the permission is received. Here activists allege that the authorities started cutting down trees on the same night they received permission.

However, on the contradictory the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation said the tree authority gave permission to chop trees on 13th September 2019 and declared that 15 day deadline ended on 28th September 2019.

By Friday night reports suggest that the authorities cut over 400 trees.

At the moment the incident has also taken a big political turn. Shiv Sena who is in alliance with the BJP in the state objects to the felling of the trees. Aaditya Thackeray, said that authorities were taking the cover of the night to shamelessly chop the trees.

This morning along with dozens of protesters Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi was also detained.
