Eight people were killed after a major fire engulfed a Mumbai hospital. Over 140 people were rescued and many remained critical. The incident broke out at Kamgar Hospital, Andheri area of Mumbai.
The patients were evacuated and shifted to other hospitals, about ten fire tenders rushed to douse the raging blaze. The hospital failed a fire audit a fortnight ago but it continued its regular day to day operations.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, a detailed investigation will be ordered.
The hospital had inflammable material at the ground floor because of construction work at a new wing. This material caught fire and the blaze spread rapidly.
Firefighting equipment were not in place and also sprinklers were not functioning, that is why the hospital failed to pass the fire safety test.
