Mehul Choksi Surrenders Indian Passport

Fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi accused in a INR₹ 13,000 crore Punjab National Bank scam has surrendered his Indian passport to Indian High Commission in Guyana.

Whenever an Indian citizen acquires foreign citizenship (in this case Choksi received Antiguan citizenship) they are expected to surrender their Indian passport.

Legal proceedings are currently underway against Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi. In 2018, the Indian government revoked the passport of Choksi after he was granted citizenship in Antiguan.

Mehul Choksi has proposed a settlement amount due to PNB and denies leaving the country after bank fraud.

In December 2018, the interpol had issued a red corner notice against Mehul Choksi. Also later that month Choksi told a Mumbai court through his lawyers that he cannot travel to India because he can’t bear a 41 hour journey from Antigua to India due to poor health. Choksi was however willing to join investigations through video-conferencing.
