Man spearfishing in Australia dies after shark attack

A 36-year-old diver died on Saturday after he was bitten by a shark while spearfishing near the popular tourist destination Fraser Island, about 400km north of Brisbane.

It is not known what species of shark bit the man, but he had been bitten around his legs, authorities said.

Paramedics on the shore tried to treat the man but he died from his injuries at the scene.

Fraser Coast mayor George Seymour called the man’s death a sad day for the community.

“Our deepest condolences go to this young man’s family and friends,” he said.

“The loss of a young life with his future before him is a tragedy beyond words. We share their sadness and grief.”

Shark attacks are not uncommon in Australia, but fatalities are. In fact Australia reports the highest number of shark attacks globally.

Just recently a 60-year-old man died after being attacked by a three-metre shark while he was surfing at Kingscliff, about 100 kilometres south of Brisbane.
