An Indian man in the state of Himachal Pradesh sold his cow, his only source of income, to buy a mobile phone so that his two children could attend online classes.
Kuldip Kumar said after the schools closed in March, his children studying in Class 4 and Class 2 were finding it difficult to continue their studies in the absence of a smartphone.
The coronavirus restrictions in the nation has forced schools to remain shut since March. Multiple lockdowns have forced schools to move classes online. He was told by teachers if he wanted his children to continue their studies they needed a smartphone.
He then approached banks and money lenders for a loan Rs 6,000 (US$ 80.11) but no one lent him money. Therefore, he decided to sell his cow, the only source of income, for Rs 6,000 (US$ 80.11) . With this money he bought a smartphone for his children.
Kumar, his wife and two of his children stay in a mud hut in Jwalamukhi of Kangra district.
