Lok Sabha okays order to revoke Article 370 and split J&K

Article 370 of the Indian Constitution which provided special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir was stripped of its powers on Tuesday. On Monday, Home Minister Amit Shah informed Rajya Sabha that President Ram Nath Kovind had signed a Presidential order to make Article 370 inoperative. The order was ratified by the Rajya Sabha on Monday and by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The Lok Sabha also passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill with 351 members in support and 72 against, and one member abstaining. The bill had already been passed in the Rajya Sabha on Monday and would now go to the President  for his assent.

The bill once signed, will bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories. Jammu and Kashmir will become a UT with legislature and Ladakh will become a separate UT without a legislature.

Soon after the bill was passed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted a congratulatory message. He tweeted, “Together we are, together we shall rise and together we will fulfil the dreams of 130 crore Indians! A momentous occasion in our Parliamentary democracy, where landmark bills pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir have been passed with overwhelming support!”
