La Soufriere Volcano: Relief boat carrying supplies to Saint Vincent drowns

‘Sunshine Angels’ – the vessel carrying supplies from Saint Lucia to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines capsized on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Three people were rescued by another boat.

Law enforcement officials told reporters that the individuals on board at the time the boat sank were the Saint Lucian captain, Mark Clement St Rose, who lives in Saint Vincent, and Vincentian nationals Cafu Guy and Winsbert Salton Harry.

The police disclosed that the boat had cleared Customs in Saint Lucia and was on its way to Saint Vincent when the mishap occurred about 4.40pm local time.

The vessel sank some 6 nautical miles South West of Saint Vincent.

About 20,000 people were evacuated from the vicinity of the La Soufriere volcano in Saint Vincent, which began erupting on April 9, 2021.

Eruptions have continued to occur daily, with ash clouds covering the country and reaching surrounding islands.
