Jharkhand mob lynch man to death, force religious sloganeering and record assault

Five men have been arrested and two police officers suspended after a mob attacked a man in Jharkhand last week. The police are still on the lookout for one more person accused of beating the 24 year old, Tabrez Ansari on Tuesday last week for allegedly stealing a motorcycle.

The relative of Tabrez Ansari said, Tabrez was going home to Saraikela-Kharsawan Krasova from Jamshedpur along with some friends on Tuesday, when the mob attacked him 5 kilometers away from his home.

Tabrez was accused of stealing a two-wheeler, was tied to a pole and beaten for hours. Videos of the beating by his attackers have gone viral on social media, his attackers forced him to chant “Jai Shri Ram” and “Jai Hanuman”. He was handed over to the police only when he fell unconscious. He was declared dead when he was brought to a hospital on Saturday, after four days in police custody.

His family claims that the police did not arrange for proper treatment for Tabrez, also that they were not allowed to meet him, and that he died long before he was taken to a hospital. The family has demanded action against all concerned, including the policemen on duty and the doctors.

Two officers Chandramohan Oraon and Bipin Bihari have been suspended for “not reporting the seriousness of the issue to the higher authorities” and “register a case of lynching on the very same day”, the state government statement read.

This shocking incident, is one among the many series of targeted violence against minorities in India in recent times.
