India inked a hundred thousand coronavirus recoveries in the past 24 hours, the health ministry data said. With this the overall recovery rate reached 80.86% which is about 45 million patients since the start of the pandemic.
During the same time 75,083 new infections were added, taking the total number of infections beyond the 55 million mark. A total of 88,935 people have lost their lives to COVID-19 till now, of which 1,053 deaths were in the last 24 hours.
India has been recording the highest number of new cases in the world since August. In September alone, India recorded an average of 90,000 cases per day until recently.
The financial state of Maharashtra remains the hardest hit by the pandemic, with over 1.2 million COVID -19 cases, including 33,015 deaths.
Health officials warned of the the situation worsening, an increase in respiratory problems as stubble burning began in the farm lands of north India.
Meanwhile, the lower house of the Indian parliament, Lok Sabha passed a legislation that provides for up to seven years in jail for those attacking healthcare workers fighting the coronavirus or during any situation akin to the current pandemic.
