India reported another record jump in the new coronavirus infections and deaths on Thursday, taking the total tally to 4.48 million.
In the last 24 hours, 95,735 new infections were detected, with 1,172 deaths accounting for the highest single-day mortality figures in more than a month, to push the toll beyond 75,000.
Infections are growing faster in India than anywhere else in the world and the United States is the only nation worse affected.
With the infection spiralling over the past few days, the government is facing severe criticism over handling of the pandemic.
India had initially implemented one of the strictest measures to slow the pandemic, which included implementing a nationwide lockdown that was deemed the largest in the world.
While the lockdown helped prevent an early outbreak, now the infection rate seems to be out of control after the government began to loosen restrictions to revive the economy.
