India on path to overtake United States with the world’s largest number of coronavirus infections

India’s total coronavirus cases rose by 78,524 in the last 24 hours to 6.84 million on Thursday morning, data from the health ministry showed.

Deaths from COVID-19 infections rose by 971 to 105,526, the ministry said.

India’s death toll from the novel coronavirus rose past 100,000 on Saturday, only the third country in the world to reach that bleak milestone, after the United States and Brazil, and its epidemic shows no sign of abating.

India is expected to overtake the United States over the next several weeks as the country with the world’s largest number of cases.

Last week, India further eased restrictions and permitted states to open schools and movie theatres.

Meanwhile, India has declined the proposal to conduct a large study in the country to evaluate Russia’s Sputnik-V Covid-19 vaccine and has asked it to first test the vaccine in a smaller trial.

Russia has claimed to have made the first coronavirus vaccine in the world and named it Sputnik V, it has been received with much skepticism across the world.
