The United States President Donald Trump expressed use of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou as a bargain in the ongoing trade negotiations.
In a Reuters interview, Trump said, “Whatever’s good for this country, I would do.”
He continued, “If I think it’s good for what will be certainly the largest trade deal ever made — which is a very important thing — what’s good for national security — I would certainly intervene if I thought it was necessary.”
The Chinese state media have already called the detention of Meng politically motivated. These words from President Trump just confirms it all.
China protested to the ambassadors of both the United States and Canada.
Meng was arrested on 1st December during a layover at Vancouver International Airport, Canada at the request of the US government. The United States alleged that Meng helped Huawei go around US sanctions on Iran, by telling HSBC that Skycom was a separate unaffiliated company of Huawei.
Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was granted bail on a surety of US$ 7.5 million, and had to surrender her passport to the Canadian authorities. She will stay in one of her Vancouver homes. Meng will have to wear an anklet GPS bracelet round the clock.
Meng’s arrest alarmed investors amidst the ongoing trade truce between China and United States.
Meanwhile China has arrested a Canadian diplomat in retaliation to the arrest of Meng Wanzhou.
