Former Finance Minister and BJP veteran Arun Jaitley was cremated with state honours in Delhi on Sunday afternoon. The 66-year-old passed away on Saturday at Delhi’s premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where he had been admitted for two weeks.
Except for PM Modi out, all the government attended Jaitley’s funeral. Politicians across the spectrum attended his funeral.
At Mr Jaitley’s south Delhi residence and later at Party office, Vice-president Venkaiah Naidu, home minister Amit Shah and Defence minister Rajnath Singh, Senior Congress leader Motilal Vora, NCP leaders Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel, RLD leader Ajit Singh and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu paid floral tributes to Jaitley.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia, Congress’s Jyotiraditya Scindia and Kapil Sibal were also present at the funeral venue.
Prime Minister Modi did not attend Jaitley’s funeral due to prior commitments in Bahrain and France.
Jaitley was a lawyer by profession was a part of PM Modi’s cabinet during his first term in office. He held the portfolios of finance and defence. He was PM Modi’s most trusted man, a backroom strategist and a troubleshooter of the party. As a minister he steered the goods and services tax, insolvency and bankruptcy code and defended many government policies such as demonetisation.
He got a triple heart bypass surgery when he was 52. In September 2014, he underwent bariatric surgery to correct the weight he had gained because of a long-standing diabetic condition. In May 2018 Arun Jaitley had undergone a kidney transplant and in Feb this year he visited the US for treatment for a rare condition.
