Father drowns at Batemans Bay beach trying to save his daughter from a rip during surfing

A man died tragically and a young girl is in the hospital after they were both pulled from the water at a beach in New South Wales, Australia.

Emergency crews arrived to Surf Beach in Batemans Bay before 1pm on Monday after they received reports of a man and a child missing in the water.

After a search, lifesavers pulled out the body of a 48-year-old man and his daughter from the ocean by Surf Lifesaving NSW near Surf Beach, and ambulance paramedics then performed CPR on the father.




He died at the scene.

Director of Lifesaving for Far South Coast Cheryl McCarthy said it was a tragic incident.

“It was very time-critical so we had a member swim out to the man and when they reached the man they were able to start CPR out in the water,” she said.



The nine-year-old girl was then taken to Batemans Bay Hospital where she is recovering in a stable condition.

The 48-year-old man is yet to be formally identified and is yet to be formally identified and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
