Delhi Capitals defeated King XI Punjab by 5 wickets on Saturday. Capitals’ Shikhar Dhawan laid the foundation with a wonderful knock of 56 from 41 deliveries. Then Shreyas Iyer too contributed an unbeaten 58 off 49 balls to complete the job with two balls to spare.
The home side were at 141 for three at the end of the 17th over and needed 23 off the last 18 balls. Colin Ingram pushed DC closer to the target. Dhawan had some fun mid over with Ravi Ashwin, when he kept dancing around the crease as Ashwin threatened to Mankad him.
With the win, DC moved to third on the points table, while KXIP remained on fourth with 10 points.
Earlier while batting first, Chris Gayle top scored with 69 off 37 balls. He hit five sixes and six boundaries in his knock, anchoring KXIP’s innings to reach 163 for seven. KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and David Miller managed just 21 off 23 between them.
Nepal leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane returned with good figures of 3/40. Pacer Kagiso Rabada had 2/23 in four overs, while Axar Patel took 2/22 in three overs. Mandeep Singh failed to step up, setting Kings XI to a total of 163 for 7.
Delhi opener, Prithvi Shaw was dismissed very early when Dhawan left him stranded at the crease. However, this dismissal did not deter Dhawan. He brought up his fifty off 36 balls. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant did not last for long either, Colin Ingram helped bring down the equation to ten needed from the last two overs.
Just at that very minute Capitals lost Ingram and Axar off successive balls in the penultimate over. However, Iyer stood his ground taking his home side to a victory.
