Delhi Capitals beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 16 runs in an IPL match on Sunday at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi. The win pushed DC to the top of the points table and confirmed their place in the playoffs. The defeat may have ended RCB’s chances to enter the top four, however their entry was still possible mathematically.
Chasing the target of 187/5, RCB ended their innings at 171/7. This was the eighth defeat for the Challengers in the tournament. The chase of RCB stated fabulously with Parthiv Patel and Virat Kohli. Just when things looked bad for DC, Kagiso Rabada sent back Parthiv, then RCB fell to 63/1 in 5.5 overs.
With just five runs on the board with AB de Villiers, Kohli was sent back on 23. However, when it looked de Villiers settled in he was dismissed at 17. Shivam Dube made attempts to bring back RCB into the game, however he was dismissed on 24. RCB needed 52 from the last four overs, but RCB didn’t have any fire batsmen to pull it off.
Earlier while batting first, Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyers half centuries anchored their innings. DC got 60 runs off the final five overs, posting a challenging total of 187/5 in 20 overs.
Dhawan and Iyer put on 68 runs for the second wicket, Sherfane Rutherford and Axar Patel ended unbeaten on 28 and 16 respectively. However, when Delhi started batting first, DC lost their first wicket Prithvi Shaw on 18 taking the total at 35/1 in four overs. RCB bowlers bowled loose deliveries purposely wanting DC batsmen to make a mistake. Yuzvendra Chahal claimed Dhawan on 50 from 37 balls.
Soon, Pant who walked in was sent back on 7, while Iyer perished trying to make the ball fly high. At this moment RCB tried to brought back the game into control, but with new batsman on crease Rutherford, Ingram and Axar Patel made sure for the total to go beyond 180.
