Deepika Padukone to play an acid attack survivor, the actress took to social media to announce the same, fans have complemented her for the transformation she has undergone to play the character.

The movie to release on the 10th January 2020, is a real life story inspired by Laxmi Agarwal, an acid attack survivor who has won hearts with her courage and indomitable spirit.

Laxmi who was born in a middle class family in Delhi received multiple advances from a stalker Naeem Khan. As she refused to marry him,  Naeem attacked her with acid.

The incident dates back to 2005, when Laxmi was on her way to a bookshop, where she came across Naeem who attacked her with acid. She lay on the street in pain, until a taxi driver came forward to rush her to the nearby Safdarjung hospital.

She had to undergo multiple surgeries and was in the hospital for three months.

When she first saw her face after the incident she was “devastated”.

After the incident she filed a PIL in 2006 with the Supreme court of India and sought a complete ban  on sale of acid. In 2013, the court ruled in favour of her plea, and imposed restrictions on the sale of acid. She vigorously campaigned for a foundation called Stop Acid Attacks.

She became the voice of millions of survivors, and was honoured by former First Lady Michelle Obama with the International Women of Courage Award.
