Cyclone Fani Makes Landfall On India’s East Coast

Three people were reportedly killed by India’s second worst cyclonic storm in 118 years, cyclone Fani. The “Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm” made landfall on India’s East Coast. Fani made landfall in the holy town of Puri in the state of Odisha this morning.

The cyclone with wind speed touching almost 240 kilometers per hour uprooted trees, damaged electric poles and cut off power supply in many parts of the state. Large parts were submerged as heavy rain battered the temple town.

The cyclone will weaken and now gradually move towards the state of West Bengal. The Odisha government conducted one of it’s largest evacuation ever, over 11 lakh people were moved to camps on higher grounds.




The cyclone resulted in cancellation of passengers flights from Kolkata and Bhubaneswar. More than 200 flights were cancelled in Kolkata, as the airport will remain shut until 8 am Saturday (4th May 2019).

The Indian Railways have cancelled 147 trains till tomorrow running in the routes affected.

The Prime Minister of India at a rally in desert state of India, Rajasthan said “I assure the affected people that the nation and the centre are with them.” The central government have also released a sum of INR₹ 1000 crore as relief in advance.



The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee cancelled her election rallies for 48 hours to inspect relief and rescue work of cyclone Fani. Meanwhile, the prime minister’s rallies in the state of Jharkhand was postponed by a day due to the cyclone.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is closely monitoring the situation from his residence.

The Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and disaster management agencies are on standby. From time to time the Indian Navy is conducting aerial surveys to assess the extent of impact and devastation.

A cyclone of a similar nature hit Odisha in 1999 claiming over 10,000 lives in the state of Odisha.

The name ”Fani” which is pronounced as “Foni” in Bengali was suggested by Bangladesh.
