Twenty-five people were killed and seventeen injured after a roof of a shelter at a cremation ground in India’s Uttar Pradesh state collapsed on Sunday.
The incident occurred in Ghaziabad district when several people had taken shelter under the recently constructed structure while it rained.
All the dead were men and relatives or neighbours of Jai Ram, who was being cremated at that time, officials said.
Rescue workers sniffed through the building’s rubble for hours to ensure that more victims were not trapped there. The local people were the first to arrive at the cremation ground in Muradnagar’s Ukhlarsi village in Ghaziabad district, adjoining the national capital.
Police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) unit also rushed to the spot to rescue the dead and injured from the debris.
Police registered a case against the a junior engineer and a supervisor.
The chief minister of the state announced a compensation of about ₹2 lakh ($2,700) to the families of each man killed.
