Congress-JD(s) coalition government at mercy of rebel MLAs

Thirteen month old Congress-Janata Dal (secular) Government is hanging on the cliff after an independent lawmaker who was also a minister submitted his resignation to the Governor and withdrew his support from the coalition government.

The latest resignation takes the total rebel MLAs count to 15, off which 13 off them belong to the ruling Congress-JD(s). Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, cut short his US trip and returned to Karnataka on Sunday.

In attempts to save the coalition government cabinet ministers from the Congress and JD(s) resigned to make way for the disgruntled MLAs. HD Kumaraswamy tweeted to confirm that a cabinet reshuffle would soon take place.

Meanwhile, repeatedly Congress and JD(s) leaders assured that there was no threat to the coalition government. The remaining JD(s) lawmakers were moved to a fancy resort in Kodagu.

All the 15 rebel lawmakers are being shifted to Goa from the Mumbai hotel as Youth Congress workers started protests outside their hotel and Congress troubleshooter DK Shivakumar headed for Mumbai.

Assuming if all the resignation of the disgruntled MLAs were to be accepted by the speaker, then the  Congress-JDS coalition would become a minority government. The BJP can stake claim to form government. The BJP would have 105 members and the support of the two Independents, while the Congress-JD(s) would fall to 103.
