Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa has decided not to celebrate the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan which is observed on the 20th November.
Following his decision the Kannada and Culture Department was ordered cut celebrations of Tipu Jayanti. BJP MLA Bopaiah filed an application for the government to end annual celebrations citing protests.
Tipu Jayanti was celebrated by the Karnataka government every year and the past few years have seen severe protests by several BJP leaders and right wing organisations.
The Tipu Jayanti celebrations were started by the Siddaramaiah government in 2015 and was observed in November every year thereafter.
The saffron party has always maintained that Tipu Sultan was a tyrant and there is no reason for Karnataka to celebrate the Mysore ruler. However, Congress and JDS have defended Tipu Sultan’s regime saying he was a valiant ruler who defended the land from the Britishers and died fighting them.
