A 21-year-old man covered in blood and branding a knife was chased and pinned down by witnesses in Sydney’s CBD after allegedly stabbing two women, one fatally.
Onlookers managed to apprehend the man, pinning him to the street with two chairs and a milk crate, near Wynyard Station on Tuesday afternoon.
After the bloody rampage ended, a woman was found dead in a unit block in Clarence St – stabbed in the neck and throat – and other woman had non life-threatening stabbing injuries.
Police say the man had made “multiple attempts” to stab other people but was “luckily unsuccessful”.
Local media identified the man as Mert Nay was absconding from a mental health facility in recent days. Anxiety medication was found on the ground near the suspect as he was being arrested.
He was also heard yelling “Allahu Akbar” at an intersection as passersby tried to apprehend him.
Police Superintendent Gavin Wood praised the efforts of passersby who executed the citizen’s arrest.
