A British woman was sentenced to a two year jail term and was also fined GBP £ 50,000 in Dubai.
The reason for her imprisonment and fine was because she called her ex-husbands wife a ‘horse’ on facebook.
The woman, Laleh Shahravesh was arrested by Dubai’s crime branch in March. She was arrested when she landed in Dubai to attend her ex-husband Pedro Manuel Correia Dos Santos’s funeral.
She commented on her ex-husbands facebook photo calling his new wife Samah Al Hammadi a ‘horse’ and her ex-husband an ‘idiot’. Shahravesh was angry after her husband left her for another woman 18 years after marriage.
When Laleh Shahravesh found that her ex-husband married through facebook she commented, “I hope you go under the ground, you idiot. Damn you. You left me for this horse.” She made the comment when she was in United Kingdom.
Her 14 year old daughter, Paris, had written to the Dubai ruler to release her mother she wrote, “I cannot emphasise enough how scared I felt, especially after losing my father just a week before, as I was having to worry about losing my mother as well…I ask kindly: please, please return my mother’s passport, and let her come home.”
Samah Al Hammadi the complainant had no mercy she said, “It is a crime in Dubai. It is right. I don’t feel sorry. She made him [Santos] suffer in the last year of his life. Let the law take part.”
The complaint filed against Shahravesh, was under cyberbullying laws of the nation.
British authorities are still to offer assistance to free their citizen.
