Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has tested positive for coronavirus.
This was his fourth test, he took it after developing symptoms, including a high temperature.
Bolsonaro made the announcement in a TV interview on Tuesday. He said the fever he had been experiencing had gone down and that he felt “very well”.
The president said that he had started experiencing symptoms on Sunday. He said he had had a high temperature, a cough and had felt unwell.
Bolsonaro,65, falls in the high-risk group. He said he was taking hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin to treat the illness.
Bolsonaro has drawn flake for downplaying the coronavirus pandemic for months, calling it “a little flu”. He publically defied wearing of masks, social distancing and even took part in anti-lockdown protests.
Some have even accused him of using the crisis to undermine democratic institutions.
His positive test results have come at a time when Brazil has the second worst-affected country only after the United States. The country has recorded over 1.6 million cases with nearly 65,000 people dead.
