A boat with at least 50 people onboard capsized in Jia Bharali river in Assam’s Sonitpur district on Thursday.
After the boat capsized in the river, several people were reported missing. The vessel was a country-made boat.
The boat was heading from Bihia Gaon near Lal Tapu to Panch Mile area in Tezpur when it got upside down on the way.
Conflicting reports within the media circle put the number of people on board between 50 and 80 people. There were several motorbikes and cattle onboard as well.
The locals were travelling to Tezpur Panch Mile for weekly market which is set up on every Thursday.
When the boat capsized, a few people managed to swim to safety.
The incident occurred around 11.30 am on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and district administration personnel have reached the spot to rescue the missing people.
