Alabama woman drops gun, accidentally shooting herself

A woman was injured when police say she dropped her gun and accidentally shot herself inside an Opelika store in Alabama on Monday.

Officers and medics arrived to find a 55-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the foot.

Investigators learned the woman accidentally dropped her gun, which caused it to discharge and strike her.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

No other injuries were reported.

Annually, more than 27,000 individuals are admitted to the emergency department across the United States for unintentional firearm injuries.

According to US government data, each year nearly 500 people die from unintentional firearm injuries — more than one person every single day.

In 2019, 486 Americans died from unintentional firearm injuries.
