Akshay Kumar Calls Citizenship Controversy ‘Personal’

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar won himself a controversy over his citizenship, after interviewing the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi in an “apolitical interview” in the middle of the ongoing national elections.

The questions reignited when the actor was seen dodging a question about whether or not he voted. On polling day, the actors wife Twinkle Khanna was spotted going to a polling booth to cast her vote, however the Canadian passport star was absent.

Kumar last month appealed to his fans to participate in the elections, even though he remained ineligible.

The actor in a statement said, “I really don’t understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship. I have never hidden or denied that I hold a Canadian passport. It is also equally true that I have not visited Canada in the last seven years. I work in India, and pay all my taxes in India. While all these years, I have never needed to prove my love for India to anyone, I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly dragged into needless controversy, a matter that is personal, legal, non-political, and of no consequence to others.Lastly, I would like to continue contributing in my small way to the causes that I believe in and make India stronger and stronger.”

Apart from this, social media users have dug out an old interview of Kumar in which he was heard saying that he holds a “Honorary Citizenship” of Canada, which is alleged to be fake. In all Canada have granted just 6 individuals Honorary Canadian citizenship but Kumar’s name was not on the list. Users feel that Kumar probably got a Canadian citizenship only because he applied for one.

Akshay Kumar started his journey in Bollywood in 1991 with ‘Saugandh‘.

He has done a series of films such as ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha‘ and ‘Padman‘ focusing on social issues.
