Supreme court Justice AK Sikri rescued himself from hearing the petition on the appointment of M Nageswara Rao as interim chief of CBI.
During a hearing last week, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi had withdrawn from the bench as he was a member of the high powered committee that appoints the CBI director. After the CJI dropped out, AK Sikri was brought in.
Today, Justice Sikri also quit from the hearing panel.
In brief, Alok Verma was removed as the CBI boss in a midnight drama in October 2018, and Nageswara Rao was made as the interim chief. This month the Supreme Court of India reinstated Mr. Verma as the CBI boss, but within 48 hours he was transferred to Fire services and Mr. Rao again took over to lead the CBI as interim Chief.
A NGO had filed a petition through Senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan, seeking to cancel the appointment of Nageshwar Rao as CBI interim chief.
