The BJP named a 28 year old lawyer as candidate for the Bangalore South seat in Karnataka at the nth moment after much discussion and drama. Initial rumors indicated that the BJP could either field Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Early Tuesday morning 1 am, was when BJP ended speculation by naming Tejasvi Surya for the Bangalore South constituency. Tuesday would be the last date to file nominations for this seat as it goes to polls on the 18th of April in the national election.
Tejasvi Surya’s expressed his happiness on Twitter.
OMG OMG!!! I can't believe this.
PM of world's largest democracy & President of largest political party have reposed faith in a 28 yr old guy to represent them in a constituency as prestigious as B'lore South. This can happen only in my BJP. Only in #NewIndia of @narendramodi— Tejasvi Surya (@Tejasvi_Surya) March 25, 2019
Bangalore South was previously held by Union Minister Ananth Kumar, who died last year. Ananth Kumar won the seat since 1999. Reports claim that Karnataka BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa suggested to field Ananth Kumar’s wife Tejaswini Ananth Kumar.
Over the past few days there were speculation among party workers that PM Modi decided to drop Tejaswini Ananth, and possibility contest himself. After intense drama, and speculation the BJP finally said it would field Tejasvi Surya.
He comes with the ideological mentoring of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and ABVP background. He is the nephew of BJP lawmaker Ravi Subramanya.
Tejaswini Surya’s critics say that delivers polarizing speeches.
He will face a Congress veteran, BK Hariprasad, who is contesting from the seat after two decades.
