At least eight people died and 12 others were were injured in an accident on a highway in Jhajjar, Haryana this morning.
Over fifty vehicles collided due to dense fog conditions. School bus, cars and SUVs were a part of the collision and it caused a 2 km-long traffic jam on the highway.
Of the eight dead, six were women.
The wrecked vehicles were removed from the highway quickly to clear the traffic chaos.
The Haryana minister OP Dhankar announced compensation of ₹2 lakh to the kin of the deceased, ₹1 lakh to those severely injured and ₹50,000 to those who have received minor injuries.
The Indian meteorological department observed moderate scattered fog over parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Western Uttar Pradesh. In some places the visibility was as low as 500 metres.
Severe weather conditions in North India has delayed many flights, the temperatures dropped to a minimum of 2-3°C . Over 131 trains were cancelled on Sunday (23rd Dec 18) due to foggy conditions.
Not just North India, the south Indian city of Bangalore also saw a delay of close to 29 international and domestic flights at Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport.
