5G enabled Apple iPhones expected only in 2020

A leading business news agency reports that the iPhones from 2020 would be supporting 5G modems that would be provided by both Samsung and Qualcomm. The access to 5G modems is a reason why Apple settled a bigger legal battle with Qualcomm.

The 5G equipped iPhone would be much quicker, and provide more reliable cellular connectivity. Apple releases the newer iPhone models in September, however this year’s launch won’t support 5G.

The one main reason why Apple would adopt the 5G based chips from Qualcomm and Samsung was to focus on lowering supply risk, reducing costs and getting a better power bargain. The agency added that it expects people to upgrade to the newer iPhone, hence taking shipments to reach 190 million in 2019 and 200 million in 2020.

Apple have had the best figures in terms of sale of iPhones in 2015, when the company sold 231 million units worldwide. After the sales trimmed in December 2018, the company decided not to release the monthly data of units sold.

Since 5G technology is different from the current, Apple might have to work on the  iPhone parts, starting with the modem, its antenna, the RF-front end and mainboard. Apple is working on the newer design layout of its printed circuit boards, and the iPhone 2019 model would use new kind of material to clear a bigger space for the battery.
