43,000 evacuated from flood-hit areas in Karnataka

About 43,000 people have been evacuated from flood-hit areas in Karnataka, where heavy rain left nine people dead. Belagavi district, the worst hit areas where six persons lost lives and 40,000 evacuated.

Two people lost lives in Uttara Kannada district and one in Shivamogga, from where 3,000 odd people were evacuated.

Closet to 20,000 people have been moved to relief camps.

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa was in Belagavi supervising relief and rescue operations.

Fire and Emergency department, State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force and Army teams were all helping with the rescue operations.

BS Yediyurappa said INR₹ 5,000 crore would be required for relief and rehabilitation in flood-hit and rain-affected areas and over 30,000 homes had to be rebuilt.

Infosys Foundation Chairperson Sudha Murthy has donated INR₹ 10 crore for the CM Relief Fund, and 198 Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) corporators announced donation of a month’s salary to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
