As the coronavirus cases keep spiking in India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh authorities decided to impose a 55-hour lockdown for the weekend.
The restrictions would be in place from 10:00pm Friday to 5:00am Monday. During this period only essential services will be allowed.
Government and private offices, shops selling non-essential items, malls and restaurants, will be shut. Also busses and other forms of public transport will be off roads.
With an exception the government allowed factories in rural areas to operate. Anyone arriving through from other states would be provided with special busses to get home.
The state of Uttar Pradesh has over 32,362 coronavirus cases including 862 deaths. At least 12,835 people recovered.
This is for the first time that Uttar Pradesh was going back into a lockdown after lifting restrictions gradually since May.
Meanwhile, India confirmed 7,94,180 infections with 21,622 deaths.
