219 children killed in Gujarat’s Rajkot and Ahmedabad’s state-run hospitals

Government run hospitals in Rajkot and Ahmedabad witnessed 219 deaths of children in the month of December last year. In Rajkot, 134 infants died in the final month of 2019. At the same time there were 85 deaths in Ahmedabad civil hospital.

Rajkot civil hospital for 2019 reveals that there were 1,235 infants deaths reported throughout the year. December saw the highest deaths (134), while October was the second highest with 131 infant deaths.

The death rate for infants stood at 18.68 per cent of the total children admitted at the Ahmedabad Civic Hospital for the month of December, GS Rathod, the hospital’s superintendent said. “In December, 455 newborns were admitted in the neonatal intensive care unit (ICU) – of them, 85 died,” Rathod said.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Sunday evaded a question on the deaths in two government hospitals of the state. Rupani was speaking to media on the sidelines of an event, but walked away from the reporters when his response to the children’s death was sought by a scribe.

Nitin Patel who is the health minister shared the figures of deaths of infants in government facilities in Rajkot and Ahmedabad and said that the figures were within IMR ratio.

The Congress slammed the BJP for the death of children at the Rajkot and Ahmedabad hospital where more than 200 infants have died.

This strangely comes at a time when when BJP has been demanding the resignation of Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot over the deaths of more than 100 infants at a government hospital in Kota.
