13-year-old boy dies from suspected drug overdose, classmate arrested on suspicion of supplying him

A 13-year-old schoolboy has died from a suspected drug overdose and police have arrested a 14-year-old on suspicion of supplying him drugs.

Mehmet Altun died in hospital after being admitted on Thursday evening having fallen ill in Bournemouth, England.

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of supplying a Class A controlled drug and is helping officers with their inquiries.

Detective Inspector Neil Third, who is leading the investigation, said: ‘This is a very tragic incident with such a young life being lost and my thoughts go out to Mehmet’s family and friends.

A post-mortem examination is yet to be conducted.

According to the classification, Class A drugs include: heroin, lysergide (LSD), ecstasy, amphetamines (prepared for injection), cocaine, crack cocaine, magic mushrooms.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 500,000 deaths occurred due to drug use in 2020 worldwide, of which more than 30% caused by overdose.
